Traditional Orthodontic Treatment for Reliable Results

Braces are an economical, durable, and time-tested way to straighten teeth and improve oral function. They can be used to resolve a wide range of orthodontic conditions relating to both the teeth and the jaws.

For all of these reasons, they can be a great orthodontic treatment for kids.

Most kids who need orthodontic intervention to correct misaligned teeth or jaws will start treatment with braces between the ages of 11 and 13, once all their permanent teeth have grown in.

In very rare cases, kids as young as eight may be candidates for braces. We use braces on children with baby teeth only when deemed absolutely necessary to create space for adult teeth to erupt in the proper positions, to correct crossbites, or to address certain functional issues.

Features of Braces for Kids

If you're a parent considering braces for your child, it's important to know that braces have changed since you were a kid. Here's how:

More Efficient

Although some kids aren't super excited about the idea of braces, more recent innovations in orthodontic science mean that braces are now more efficient at correcting misalignments than in the past. That translates to shorter treatment times than ever before.

More Streamlined

Not very long ago, braces were bulky and sharp, often accompanied by headgear. Today, metal braces are much smaller and lighter, designed with comfort and effectiveness in mind. An additional bonus is that modern braces typically only need to be adjusted every four to six weeks!

More Fun

Children's braces can actually be fun. Although they do affect the appearance of the smile during treatment, many of our young patients look forward to choosing the next colour for their braces' elastics. Some even like to choose a mixture of colours for extra pizazz.

Braces at Lo Elliott Orthodontics

Orthodontic braces traditionally straighten teeth using a combination of brackets, elastic bands, and wires.

But the braces of today aren't the clunky, uncomfortable face-full-of-metal that you might be picturing from decades ago. Modern braces are more streamlined and more comfortable than ever before.
