A Practical Approach to Orthodontics in Prince George
As your child grows and develops, orthodontic issues could be developing too. Children should visit the orthodontist for an early assessment so that any issues can be identified and preparations can be made for future treatment.
At Lo Elliott Orthodontics, we take a conservative approach to orthodontics for children.
We monitor growth and development of the jaws and teeth, intervening only when appropriate. Most children can wait until most of their permanent dentition develops before orthodontic treatment is necessary, but monitoring the stages will help significantly.
By bringing your child in for regular visits before treatment, you give our team an opportunity to provide tailored treatment recommendations, including the best time to start, the type of appliance, and more.
Lo Elliott Orthodontics Kids Club
Centred around regular checkups, including imaging and monitoring, Club Cru is a club just for kids! It gives young children an opportunity to get comfortable with our team, learn that visiting the orthodontist is fun, and discover the benefits of orthodontic care.
Does my child need braces?
During the kids club experience we will have good insight into whether your child would benefit from orthodontic treatment. Most kids can wait until their permanent teeth have grown in, but there are always exceptions when earlier intervention is required.
That said, an orthodontic evaluation at about age eight is a great step towards a healthy smile for life. If we believe that braces later in childhood could be beneficial, regular monitoring appointments will be recommended.
By starting regular appointments early, your orthodontist can ensure your child begins treatment at the right time and gets the best results possible. At these appointments, your orthodontist will check that:
- Baby teeth are being lost on schedule
- Permanent teeth are erupting in the correct order at an appropriate age
- That permanent teeth have enough space to erupt properly
- Jaws are developing correctly
Taking pictures and using radiographic imaging between the ages of eight and 11 can help us keep a close eye on developing issues and prepare ahead for braces.
